Preparing for a Minnesota Winter
Everything on this page is easier, cheaper, and more available in September than it is in January. That is essentially the whole argument.
A Minnesota winter is unforgiving of deferred maintenance in a way milder climates are not. A heating failure in October is an inconvenience. The same failure in a January deep-cold stretch, when every technician in the county is booked, is a genuine emergency with the potential to freeze pipes and damage the house.
Fill before the cold
Filling ahead of the season rather than reacting to a low gauge is the most valuable habit available to an oil-heated household:
- Price is generally lower outside peak demand. Not guaranteed, but the seasonal tendency is real.
- Consumption is not linear. As covered in heating oil basics, a cold snap raises consumption dramatically, not modestly. A tank that looks adequate for January at normal temperatures may not be.
- Delivery is hardest exactly when you need it most. In a severe cold stretch, dealers are at capacity, roads are bad, and rural driveways may be impassable.
- A full tank condenses less water, meaning less internal corrosion and sludge — see tank care. A real argument for filling at the end of the season too, which is the opposite of most people's instinct.
On will-call rather than automatic delivery, this responsibility is entirely yours — and a gauge is not precise. Check it regularly and treat "about a quarter" as a call to act, not a comfortable position.
Service before the season
Annual service on oil equipment is not an upsell. Oil burners have real consumables and real adjustment requirements, more so than gas equipment, and skipping it is how a working system becomes a failed one.
A proper service typically includes:
- The nozzle replaced. A precision component that wears and clogs, disrupting the spray pattern and degrading combustion — soot, inefficiency, eventually a failure to light. Replaced annually as a matter of course.
- Filters changed at the tank and burner, and electrodes inspected and gapped so the spark reliably ignites the mist.
- The combustion chamber and heat exchanger cleaned and inspected. Soot insulates and cuts efficiency, and a cracked exchanger can put combustion products into living space.
- Combustion tested with instruments. The part that separates real service from a visual check — measuring efficiency, draft, and CO, and adjusting the air-to-fuel ratio. A burner is tuned, not merely cleaned.
- The flue checked for blockage, and safety controls verified, including the cad cell that shuts the system down if it fails to light.
Book it early. Technicians are solid once the first cold arrives, and a September appointment is a different experience from a January one.
Thermostat, pipes, and the house
Test the heat before you need it. Run the system in early autumn — a fault found on a mild day is a service call; found at minus twenty it is an emergency.
Be careful with deep setbacks. Turning the thermostat far down while away saves fuel, but it also lets the house and its plumbing get cold. If a system fails while set low, there is much less thermal margin before pipes are at risk. Modest setbacks are sensible; deep ones in severe weather are a gamble, particularly for an empty house.
Protect the pipes. Those at risk run through unheated or poorly insulated spaces — crawlspaces, exterior walls, garages. Insulate what you can. In extreme cold, letting a vulnerable faucet drip keeps water moving, and opening cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls lets warm air reach the plumbing. Know where your main shutoff is before you need it in a hurry.
Keep the fill and vent accessible. A driver who cannot reach the fill pipe cannot deliver, and snow burying them is a routine reason for a missed delivery. Mark them so they can be found after heavy snow, and keep the driveway passable — a fuel truck is heavy and needs room. And check the CO alarms: any home with combustion equipment needs working, tested carbon monoxide alarms. That is not optional.
Backup heat
The question is not whether the heat will fail but what happens when it does. Power outages take oil systems down as surely as anything else — the burner, pump, and controls all need electricity, and a full tank heats nothing without it.
Worth thinking through in advance: a generator, and whether it is wired to run the heating system safely — which requires a proper transfer switch, not an extension cord. A wood stove, if the house has one, with actual dry wood on hand rather than a theoretical plan. And somewhere to go if the house becomes untenable. Decide it in advance; nobody makes good decisions about this at 3am in a cold house.
If you run out of oil
It happens, and it is not simply a matter of adding fuel and carrying on.
Why restarting needs care. When a tank runs dry, two things happen. The system draws the sediment at the very bottom — the sludge described in tank care — straight into the fuel line, filter, and nozzle, which is exactly what clogs them. And air enters the line. An oil burner cannot pump air; the line must be bled before the system will run. Putting oil in and pressing reset typically will not work, and pressing reset repeatedly is actively harmful — each attempt can pump unburned oil into the combustion chamber.
What to do: arrange a delivery and service at the same time. Expect the filter to need changing and the nozzle possibly replacing, since both have just been fed sediment, and expect the system to need bleeding. On most systems this is properly a technician's job: do not improvise with fuel-handling equipment. This is combustion equipment, and the failure modes are not forgiving.
Do not put diesel or anything else in the tank without knowing it is appropriate for your system and legal for the use. Road diesel is taxed differently and is not an interchangeable substitute.
